He has nearly 20 years of experience in the industry as a model agent and casting director. His diverse clientele include Maye Musk, Zach Miko and ballet dancer-turned-model Fabrice Calmels. We spoke about our years in the fashion trenches, and what advice we would give to those coming up in the industry.

Why we need to talk about mental health in fashion

In fashion we’re all about hunting for the new: for the next great shot, the next beautiful face, the next decade-defining silhouette. Yet this blind march towards the future can take a great toll. The hectic hours, unforgiving deadlines and constant criticism can break down our sense of self and our connection to those we love.  With 20 years in the industry, I’ve seen firsthand the emotional impact of this culture. And it's more important than ever to nurture each other. Whether you’re just starting out, or you're an old veteran, we can all use these self-care tips and resources below.

Get Help:

Mental health issues can escalate quickly without professional guidance, so finding the right therapy is crucial. An upcoming app from the Humans of Fashion Foundation will streamline this process, connecting fashion professionals to licensed therapists. They will also provide access to pro bono legal representation and a mentorship network for holistic counseling.

Find your family:
When I first started out in the industry, I took refuge with Models for Christ, a faith-based group that provided instant emotional support and sense of community. With our globetrotting, fast-paced schedules, it’s crucial to find such companionship with like-minded individuals. Some focus on specific challenges like The Chain, a peer network for those recovering from eating disorders.

Be your own Advocate:
Fashion is full of contract workers, who often lack formal channels to report abuse that create destructive working conditions. The international initiative Model’s Health Pledge provides an avenue to anonymously submit concerns about their members, which includes the top agencies and publications in the industry.

On Set:

Narrow Jeans Men's Campaign

Some photo shoots loom large in my memory as just magical. This perfectly describes my experience producing the Narrow Jeans campaign. I returned to my hometown Kingston, Jamaica for this amazing shoot, incorporating local performers with models. Shot by the amazing Chino Zavalia, the campaign beautifully captured the brand's relaxed ease.
